The former Brazilian leader has been taken into custody after authorities concluded he posed a serious risk of fleeing while under domestic detention.
The former head of state was sentenced of planning a military coup in last fall and given more than over two decades in jail, but he continued under confinement pending appeals.
High Court Judge Alexandre de Moraes said the action to imprison the 70-year-old politician was a safety action after "new facts" were revealed.
This included seeking to disable his electronic bracelet and a summons to a public vigil that could "allow for a possible escape.
Judicial Records Show Escape Concerns
In a document approving the arrest, the judge said information from the facility tracking his home detention suggested the ex-president's plan to remove the surveillance device to guarantee victory in his getaway".
This, it said, would be assisted by the disorder caused by the demonstration called by his son.
His offspring, Flávio Bolsonaro, who holds office as a senator, called for a meeting of his supporters near his father's house to take place on the weekend.
Flávio Bolsonaro wrote on social media on the previous day: Do you plan to struggle for your nation, or watch it all from your phone there on your sofa? I urge you to struggle with us."
He said the vigil would be so supporters could offer prayers for his well-being and for the return of democracy in our nation."
Diplomatic Refuge Fears
Part of Justice Moraes's determination was the chance of his "relocation to foreign missions near the dwelling, considering that the probes revealed a history of organizing to seek refuge through a diplomatic representation", a statement said.
The court filing emphasizes that the American diplomatic mission in the national capital, Brasilia, is positioned around 13km from his dwelling.
Global Responses
The former president's legal troubles have generated frustration from fellow conservative nationalist American leader Trump, prompting him to impose a half-rate duty on Brazilian product imports.
The former president is being held in a federal law enforcement building in Brazil's capital city and will undergo a imprisonment assessment on Sunday.
Recent Legal Requests
It was only on last Friday that the ex-leader's attorneys asked the Top Court to authorize him to serve his whole jail sentence under domestic detention, with digital surveillance.
They also asked that the former president be allowed to exit his dwelling for healthcare, saying he demanded ongoing care for respiratory ailments and other ailments.
Details of Guilty Verdict

The conspiracy was thwarted because it couldn't obtain the support of the armed forces officials. Lula was inaugurated without problem on January 1st, 2023.
But a following week, on January 8th, thousands of his followers attacked and damaged official structures in the capital, the capital city.
The law enforcement intervened and around approximately 1,500 persons were arrested.
The judges found that the rioters had been incited by him whose plan, they said, was for the national armed forces to take action, reestablish control and return him to office.
At the moment, Bolsonaro's lawyers called the decades-long sentence unreasonably severe".
He was also prohibited from seeking elected position until the year 2060 - a decade minus two years after the completion of his term.
