Larian Studios Unveil a New Divinity, Labeling it Their Biggest RPG Ever

The speculation around the recent awards show reached a fever pitch, particularly after host Geoff Keighley posted an enigmatic photo of a desert monolith. The mystery is finally answered. The acclaimed developer is working on a completely new Divinity game.

Titled simply Divinity, the game was presented with a audacious trailer that included intense imagery, from a figure engulfed in flames to scenes of revelry and the very opening of infernal gates.

Not the Expected Sequel

Anyone anticipating Divinity Original Sin 3, this is not that. The studio stated ahead of time that a follow-up to its beloved RPGs is not currently in development.

However, the developer referred to this new Divinity as a next chapter of the core franchise. This phrasing hints that the team is likely crafting a faster-paced experience rather than another turn-based title. Currently, it remains theory, as only a teaser video is available.

What Makes Divinity Special

The Divinity series is highly rated and it's fair to claim it pioneered the contemporary revival of deep computer role-playing games. These games are defined by rich lore, player agency, and deep class systems—elements that recently were perfected in games like Baldur's Gate 3.

While its universe is classic fantasy, what really distinguishes Divinity apart is the unprecedented level of trust granted to the player.

Where many modern RPGs have streamlined options, Divinity is packed with specialized paths you can achieve with a particular class or origin with a specific history of choices.

The series is also famously permissive, allowing players to improvise in narrative and gameplay. Virtually all objectives can be solved in a variety of manners, frequently in unexpected fashion.

  • You might solve a puzzle because you remembered something a dog told you.
  • Or, you could bypass a challenge by using the world itself in a unorthodox way.

More to Come

It is these creative systems that have cemented the series to label games like Divinity Original Sin 2 as a top-tier role-playing games of all time. Now, fans can anticipate a new entry in this legendary franchise.
