Royal Air Force Typhoon FGR4s have conducted a mission with France's air force in a joint strike targeting an subterranean weapons facility in Syrian territory employed by the IS group, according to the UK Ministry of Defence.

The location, identified by intelligence, was believed to be storing arms and explosives, the announcement noted, and was situated in mountains just above the historic site of Palmyra in central Syria.

"Our aircraft employed Paveway IV guided bombs to target a series of approach shafts providing entry to the depot... initial indications indicate the target was engaged successfully," officials stated.

There was no evidence of any civilian impact in the attack on Saturday evening and all the aircraft made a safe return, the ministry further stated.

The Typhoon fighters were backed up by a Voyager refuelling tanker.

The Islamic State group - alternatively referred to as the so-called Islamic State - enforced extremist governance over significant areas in both Syria and Iraq until 2019.

"This strike demonstrates our UK leadership, and commitment to work closely with allied nations, to eliminate any revival of the terrorist group and their harmful and extremist ideologies in the area," UK Defence Secretary the Defence Secretary said.

UK warplanes have performed patrols over Syria to "prevent any attempted resurgence" of IS after its military defeat at the Baghuz confrontation in 2019, the MoD reported.

"I want to thank the personnel of our armed forces participating in this strike for their skill and their bravery," Healey said. "They were among thousands of British personnel on duty over the festive period. This operation, to eliminate militants who threaten our safety, demonstrates how UK forces are ready to step up, continuously, keeping Britain secure at home and powerful internationally."

During December, the United States armed forces conducted what it described as a "major assault" against Islamic State objectives in Syria, subsequent to an ambush claimed the lives of two American soldiers and a local interpreter in Palmyra.

The U.N. reports Daesh still has roughly 5-7 thousand militants in Syria and Iraq.
