An Kindness of Unknown Individuals: The Way a Man I Barely Knew Assisted Me Secure the Position That Altered My Path

During the final years of the 1980s, I set out on a budget travel adventure to Europe with a friend. Because my travel mate was considering starting a postgraduate program in New York, we had arranged a 14-day stopover there en route to London.

We got to the postgrad residence, a sizeable 10-storey building on the Manhattan's Upper West Side known as International House. After dropping our bags, we headed straight to the cafeteria, where we got some food, found a table, and engaged in conversation with other diners.

Beside me was an gentleman from Iraq enrolled in an engineering program at a prestigious New York university. He inquired what I did, and I told him that I had just graduated with a degree in science and had been performing experiments involving microscopic analysis.

He pointed out that there was an microscopy facility at Columbia University – adjacent to the engineering faculty, which was why he was aware of it. He proposed that I ought to seek a job with them. I dismissed the idea, telling him that I was heading off to Europe and, additionally, I did not possess a US visa.

A day later I went out exploring, returning to the canteen that night. The Iraqi student approached me and let me know that he had organized a discussion for me with the leader of the research team at Columbia. Because he had made the arrangement, I showed up for the discussion – but immediately told my host that I didn’t have a visa, so I was unable to accept the role.

Reflecting the city's spirit – a metropolis where everything seems achievable – she said: “We'll handle it. What's your start date?” I missed my plane to London.

I held that position for 36 months. A perk of the job was that I was granted free tuition at Columbia, and I took advantage to earn a graduate degree in global studies.

We didn't cross paths after that and I can't recall his full name, but his selfless gesture changed my life in so many ways. I would never have had the confidence or self-assurance to contact anyone at an Ivy League university and seek a position. And, I had long dreamed to study abroad, but could never have afforded it without that free tuition.

Perhaps most importantly, that gig at Columbia resulted in a role in Europe where I met my handsome spouse from France, with whom I am raising four wonderful sons and daughters. This was a pivotal life event. That benevolent individual redirected my path in life, and I’m forever grateful.
